Marigolds and their Cultural Uses

The marigold was regarded as the flower of the dead in pre-Hispanic Mexico and is still widely used in the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) celebrations.

The marigold is also widely cultivated in India and Thailand. It is always sold in the markets for daily worship and rituals.

Vast quantities of marigolds are used in garlands and decoration for weddings, festivals, and religious events. Marigold cultivation is extensively seen in many states of India (for the Diwali markets.

In Ukraine, signet marigolds are regarded as one of the national symbols, and are often mentioned in songs, poems and tales.

In Bangladesh, India and many South Asian countries marigolds are used for ornamentation purposes in functions like turmeric ceremonies, weddings, Pohela Falgun and other functions .
